Coimbatore Handloom Exhibition
A handloom exhibition featuring 60 stalls is currently underway at Kalpana Kalyana Mandapam in Coimbatore and will continue until January 10.
According to a press release from the district administration, the event was inaugurated by Ministers V. Senthil Balaji and R. Gandhi. It showcases handloom products from 113 handloom weavers’ societies across Tamil Nadu. Similar exhibitions are being held in Tiruchi, Salem, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore, with handwoven goods valued at ₹5 crore. The Coimbatore expo aims to achieve sales of ₹3.5 crore.
The exhibition features a variety of products, including silk and cotton sarees, silk dhotis, home textiles, carpets, and other textile fabrics.
The press release also highlighted that the State’s handloom cooperative societies produced goods worth ₹1,091.93 crore and recorded sales of ₹1,242.99 crore in the last financial year. State-level handloom exhibitions organized in Coimbatore and Salem during 2023-2024 brought in ₹6.56 crore in revenue.
During the inaugural ceremony, the Ministers distributed support to 10 weavers for loom accessories, welfare aid to three weavers, and pension orders to five others. Additionally, they announced the establishment of a handloom silk park near Arani. The park, spread over 2,053 acres and costing ₹44 crore, will accommodate 5,000 weavers.
The event emphasizes the significance of handloom weaving in the State, showcasing the traditional craft's richness and providing opportunities for weavers to connect with wider markets.
