Hathkargha Mela Kicks Off at Kashmir Haat, Celebrating J&K’s Rich Handloom Legacy
Srinagar, June 5: In a vibrant tribute to India’s rich handloom heritage, the “Hathkargha Mela” — a special Union Territory-level Handloom Expo — opened today at the Kashmir Haat Exhibition Ground in Srinagar.
The 14-day event is being held under the aegis of the Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom, Kashmir, and is supported by the Development Commissioner for Handlooms under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The expo gathers around 60 skilled weavers and artisans from across the regions of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
This grand showcase provides artisans with a valuable platform to present and sell their handmade textiles directly to customers, fostering appreciation for traditional weaving arts and empowering local weaver communities economically.

Visitors to the fair can explore a diverse range of handloom treasures, including luxurious Pashmina shawls, intricate Kani and Sozni embroidery, elegant cotton and silk sarees, stoles, rugs, decorative home linens, and unique regional fabrics.
More than just a market, the Hathkargha Mela is a cultural celebration that shines a light on the aesthetic and socio-economic importance of the handloom sector. As the event aligns with the festive season, organizers are expecting enthusiastic participation from both locals and tourists.
A key highlight of the event includes live weaving and crafting demonstrations by master artisans from the School of Designs, Srinagar. Additionally, exhibits by the Craft Development Institute and the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology offer attendees a deeper understanding of the region’s rich textile legacy.
Running through June 18, the expo invites everyone to discover and shop for genuine handloom products at fair prices, while actively supporting the region’s traditional craftspersons.
